Come to the political and cultural festival for Latinx changemakers who are building a future rooted in justice, liberation, and el Buenvivir.

La Vida Local 2022 Awardees: Poder Sin El Estado

We are excited to announce our 2022 La Vida Local Awardees — projects throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico that are taking on sin el estado (without the state) experiments and working to build community autonomy for our gente. La Vida Local is both an initiative to resource and support groups that are building power without the state through small grants, and also an opportunity to map out the different places where this work is happening — within and beyond the Mijente eco-system.

Check out this year’s projects below!

LATINX STUDY: ATTITUDES ON POLICING AND SAFETY

Mijente is proud to release the first national comprehensive study on Latinx attitudes about policing and public safety in the United States and Puerto Rico. We believe in our gente and our communities, that together we can envision and build futures beyond the constraints of punitive measures.

This report comes through collaboration between Mijente, Perry Undem, the Community Resource Hub, and the Center for Advancing Innovative Policy. Below are a few highlights from the documnet, but you can access the full report findings in the box above.

We commissioned this study to better understand Latinx experiences and develop strategic organizing interventions and resources. The results tell a story that mirrors the Latinx diaspora as a whole: our gente’s political perspectives vary drastically depending on any number of factors.

One out of 10 Latinxs report that a police officer has pointed a gun at them. While one in 3 Afro-Latinxs reports that they or a family member has had that experience.
71% of Latinx Republicans express support for changing the laws to prevent police violence.

Still, in analyzing thousands of responses across 11 different focus groups, it is clear that our gente believe that making communities safer is about resources, jobs, and education, not more police. Together, we can develop opportunities to mobilize communities, inform new organizing, and sharpen political demands.
