On April 30th, Mijente will hold a one-day training and workshop with Rodrigo Paredes Ceballos to look at some of the burning questions of this political moment:
- What is the relationship between electoral politics and social movement organizing?
- How do we organize in ways that build power, engage our communities, and defeat harmful candidates?
- How do we raise standards for candidates who want support from our communities?
This year is already full of lessons, threats, opportunities for Latinxs and Chicanxs who want to build power of our communities. The year started with widely publicized raids and detention of Central American immigrants. In Chicago the #ByeAnita campaign showed how direct action can change politics without endorsing a candidate. Donald Trump has gone from insulting Mexicans to inciting a new fascist movement in the country. Meanwhile the candidates who aren’t aiming to deport us all still tend to rely on celebrity endorsements and hispandering to get out the Latino vote.
We will base the discussion in the experience of the MPL – Movimiento de Pobladores en Lucha – from Chile whose motto of “Desde el estado, sin el estado, en contra del estado” (from the state, without the state, and against the state) has guided new experiments in building community power ranging from land takeovers and starting a certified university to holding neighborhood and national assemblies and even running a candidate for President of the country
