Lánzate – The Jump Off:
Mijente’s Founding Convening

December 12th & 13th, 2015, Mijente will hold its founding convening in Chicago, IL.
Yes, that cold Chicago. It’s time.

Mijente is a new national hub for Latinx and Chincanx organizing.

Using a hybrid offline and online platform, we seek to create a political home that brings together  leadership, advocacy, culture and media to spark the culture and policy change that Latinxs, all of us – workers, youth, indigenous, queer and gender non-conforming, afro descendants, undocumented, low-income, women, those who are convicted and/or incarcerated, families and the elderly — desperately need.

It’s time because we hear so much about changing demographics in this country, and know better then to assume self-determination and power comes freely.

The world we want requires more from us, not just more of us.

Chicago’s gathering will include…

Discussion on core elements of a radical Latinx agenda, including pressing issues across sectors like: criminal justice, immigration, education, LGBTQ, labor and climate.

Cultural and networking events.

Proposals and strategizing for a program of action for the 2016 Presidential Election beyond voter registration.

Sessions designed to spark imagination and creativity to ground us in what is possible.

Who is this for?

We are not firsts, and we are not lasts.

We recognize and support multiple approaches to social change. One group cannot be everything to everyone. This is for Chicanxs and Latinxs who seek ways to build movement in more effective ways and who do not have to be convinced about the need to combat racism, sexism, afro-phobia, homophobia inside ourselves, our movements and in the world around us. The points below do not encompass the totality of our politic and vision, but we offer them in hopes of giving those considering attending a sense of what kind of space this will be.

Nosotrxs Creemos

We believe that the disinvestment in the commons and rampant criminalization of our communities through the mass incarceration and mass deportation is a threat to any promise of demographic change. The existing work addressing these issues should be amplified and in addition, we need more efforts like this and leaders willing to name and pursue solutions to these problems beyond respectability politics, partisanship and electoral politics.

For too long our community has been portrayed as a single-issue voting bloc with immigration positioned as Latinos’ only issue and only a Latino issue. It’s locked out issues of US born Latinxs and Chicanxs, boxed-in undocumented leaders to only have room to speak on their status, and ignored the existence of the millions of immigrants who come from outside of Latin America. Fighting for migrant rights is a front-line for our communities but not the only one. We are more than our immigration status.

Racism, patriarchy and homophobia exists inside of our communities, organizations and movement. We do not believe in a hierarchy of oppression, but we will shine a light on, support and increase the leadership of those of us who are traditionally marginalized.

Building for Latinx people means building a multi-racial social justice movement, unequivocally pro-Black and trailblazing different forms of collaboration and convergence.
