Phoenix: Mas Que Un Voto Training

On June 11th, Mijente will host a Mas Que un Voto training in Phoenix. The training is a deeper dive into one of the most successful workshops held at Mijente’s founding convening, Lánzate, last December.

Whether its witnessing the level of hispandering in the 2016 Presidential election or recent experiences trying to pass progressive legislation here in Arizona, there are certainly important questions to consider:

– What’s the relationship between social movements and electoral politics?

– How do we raise the standards for earning our vote?

– How might we reimagine civic engagement beyond turning out for candidates?

We believe it is critical we determine our path to power and self-determination in our communities and movements.

The training will build from the presentation led by Rodrigo Paredes Ceballo at Lánzate, using the experience of the Movimiento de Pobladores en Lucha (MPL) from Chile and their motto of ‘contra el estado, sin el estado, desde el estado’ to build power. The MPL has guided new experiments in building community power ranging from land takeovers, starting a certified university, holding neighborhood assemblies to running a candidate for President.

This example is a point of entry and the frame of ‘against the state/outside the state/from the state’ we can adapt to analyze our practice here that allows us to see the spectrum of strategies and how we all fit in.
